Building a Nail

The nail in this image is built in Photoshop and stabbed through the flower only digitally. To do this, build the nail first. It’s simply a rectangle, with a point added to one end, then a circle added to the other end. I used a Bevel and Emboss layer style on the circle giving it dimension, like on the nail head, and then filled in the shaft of the nail with a color, burning one side and dodging the other to give it form. Adding a texture creates a more realistic looking nail. The completed nail was placed on its own layer and then layer mask was added. A small, hard-edged black brush was used to paint a layer mask black where the petals needed to appear to be in front of the nail.
